  • Applies to Los Angeles, California. Prices checked October 20, 2026.
  • The venue and the food drive the cost. A City of LA park picnic permit for up to 50 people is $25 plus $90 (LA Rec & Parks, rev. April 2026).
  • Planner estimates vary a lot: $3,000–$10,000 (PlanAFuneral), $5,000–$20,000 (Eternally Loved), $15,000–$50,000 (Lovely Day Legacies). The last two sell planning services.
  • The funeral or cremation is a separate bill from the gathering. Price them separately.
  • Keep every receipt. Who ends up paying, the family or the estate, depends on the estate and the executor.

Los Angeles, California · Prices checked October 20, 2026

A celebration of life in Los Angeles can cost as little as $115 or well over $10,000. The cheap end is a City of LA park picnic permit for up to 50 people: a $25 reservation fee plus $90 (LA Rec & Parks fee schedule, rev. April 2026). For a catered event, planner estimates run from $3,000–$10,000 for 50–100 guests (PlanAFuneral, March 2026) to $5,000–$20,000 for about 100 guests in Southern California (Eternally Loved, accessed Oct 2026).

No one budgets for this, and you're doing it on someone else's timeline. So here's the bill, line by line, with every number tied to whoever published it. We don't sell venues or catering, so we're not inflating anything. Where no one publishes a price, we say so.

What does a celebration of life cost? Three estimates, side by side

Planners publish very different numbers. Here they are, unblended. Two of the three sell planning services, so read them as ballparks.

Read the fine print on public spaces: City of LA picnic permits don't allow alcohol or amplified sound (LA Rec & Parks, Mason Recreation Center picnic guidelines, Apr 2026). Is the funeral or cremation a separate cost?

Yes, and mixing them up is how budgets get confusing. There are two bills:

  1. The body: burial or cremation, through a licensed funeral home or crematory. That's a funeral cost. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, funeral homes must give you written price lists, and you can buy only the goods and services you want instead of a package (FTC, accessed Oct 20, 2026). See funeral and cremation coordination and how much a funeral costs in the US.
  2. The gathering: the celebration of life itself. Venue, food, AV, flowers. No funeral home required.

A celebration of life is often in addition to a direct cremation or burial, not instead of one. Price both before you decide what's "cheaper." If flowers are part of it, see funeral flowers.

How do families keep the cost down?

  1. Use a public park or a rec center room. The fee tables above are the cheapest published options in LA.
  2. Pick a weekday. Brand Park is $850 on weekdays vs. $1,600 on weekends (LA Rec & Parks).
  3. Potluck or drop-off catering. Say yes to everyone asking "what can I do?" Their answer is a tray of something.
  4. Wait a few weeks. A celebration of life doesn't have to happen right away. More time means more dates and cheaper days.
  5. Ask what's not included. Deposits, security, staff hours, overtime, cleaning. Brand Park requires 2–5 security monitors at extra cost (LA Rec & Parks).

Who pays for a celebration of life: the family or the estate?

Usually the family pays upfront. Sometimes the estate reimburses some costs, if there's money in it and the executor agrees. Whether a reception counts, and in what order the estate pays its bills, depends on the estate and the law, so don't assume. Keep every receipt, and ask the executor or a probate attorney before you spend money you expect back. If you're the executor, start with our executor checklist.

This is coordination information, not legal, tax or financial advice.

Common questions

How much does a celebration of life cost in Los Angeles?
It depends mostly on the venue and food. A City of LA park picnic permit for up to 50 people costs a $25 reservation fee plus $90 (LA Rec & Parks fee schedule, rev. April 2026). Planner estimates for a catered event range from $3,000–$10,000 for 50–100 guests (PlanAFuneral, March 2026) to $5,000–$20,000 for about 100 guests in Southern California (Eternally Loved).
What is the cheapest way to have a celebration of life in LA?
Host it at home or in a public park. A City of LA picnic permit for up to 50 people is $25 plus $90; LA County Parks charges individuals $80 for a small picnic area. City park permits don't allow alcohol or amplified sound. Potluck food keeps the rest cheap.
Is a celebration of life cheaper than a funeral?

Who pays for a celebration of life?
Usually the family, sometimes reimbursed from the estate if there's money and the executor agrees. Rules vary, so keep every receipt and ask the executor or a probate attorney before assuming the estate will cover it.
