First 48 Hours

  1. Obtain a legal pronouncement of death
  2. Contact a funeral home
  3. Secure the home and any valuables
  4. Locate the will
  5. Notify immediate family

Week One

  1. Order at least 10 certified death certificates
  2. File the will with the probate court
  3. Apply for Letters Testamentary
  4. Notify Social Security Administration
  5. Contact the employer (if applicable)
  6. Notify life insurance companies
  7. Redirect mail

Month One

  1. Open an estate bank account
  2. Take inventory of all assets
  3. Notify all financial institutions
  4. Cancel credit cards and non-essential subscriptions
  5. Notify beneficiaries formally
  6. Assess whether probate is required

Months 2–6

  1. Complete probate filing if required
  2. Obtain property appraisals as needed
  3. Pay valid creditor claims
  4. File the deceased's final federal and state tax returns
  5. File estate income tax return (Form 1041) if needed
  6. Liquidate or transfer assets as directed

Final Steps

  1. Distribute assets to beneficiaries
  2. Obtain signed receipts from all beneficiaries
  3. File final accounting with probate court
  4. Apply for discharge as executor
  5. Close the estate bank account
