A deceased person's estate can accumulate charges from subscriptions and services for months if they're not cancelled promptly. Here's how to find and cancel everything — systematically.
Why This Matters
Overlooked subscriptions cost estates hundreds to thousands of dollars annually. They also complicate the final accounting and can result in contested charges if left unaddressed. Cancellation is a core executor responsibility.
How to Find All Active Subscriptions
- Review the last 3 months of bank statements and credit card statements
- Check email for recurring receipts (search "receipt," "renewal," "billing")
- Check the App Store or Google Play for active subscriptions on their phone
- Check PayPal for active recurring payments
Streaming and Digital Subscriptions
Most streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Spotify, etc.) can be cancelled online. For services that require a phone call, have the death certificate information ready. Most will refund the unused portion of the current billing period upon proof of death.
Utilities and Physical Subscriptions
Utilities should be transferred to the new property owner or cancelled on the date the property is vacated. Newspaper and magazine subscriptions, gym memberships, and delivery services typically require a written or email cancellation request.
Social Media and Online Accounts
Social media accounts require specific processes per platform — see our guide on managing a digital estate for detailed instructions.
